While Amazon classifies this product as a "toy," the lamp will no longer be a toy per se, but a device for the serious hobbyist. I bought the Spectroline MiniMAX to seem at fluorescent minerals in my assortment. The twin short wave/long wave selector is a useful characteristic on this regard. It should be stated that this can also be a small unit, and as such the best viewing is in full darkness with the unit held a couple of inches from the specimen being examined. While no longer the brightest gentle source, I've if truth be told used the lamp for container amassing.

FIRST: listing this thing as a "toy" is WRONG. WTF!!!(see under evaluation for why this troubles me so so much). ...That being mentioned, I love this factor! it gives my ever-growing, semi-respectable amateur mineral collection a brand new dimension of awesomeness to nerd out about to my pals (explaining calcite and all its mineralogically sophisticated optical residences and phosphorescence by method of bitchin' power level transitions makes me drool while making my friend's eyes glaze over). Some of my fluorite specimens have some candy shade hearts and thought-provoking "impurities" shown off through the different wavelengths of this lamp, plus i now LOVE benitoite(state mineral of california) on so many stages, now not only a pretty blue uncommon mineral with an excellent crystal form, it glows blue too beneath the short wave UV filtered gentle! Anyways..., I could go on and on about how happy this lamp has made me, even though it is a bit low-power and must be rather with reference to the specimen to in point of fact glow like loopy, mainly I now need a much more powerful / rugged model for serious box use... but i doubt i will have enough money one, especially on a college pupils finances, so this works great for now. GET SOME GOOD UV BLOCKING SAFETY GLASSES BEFORE USING THIS FOR EXTENDED PERIODS.

"Shortwave lamps are a different subject entirely! Shortwave UV lamps produce shortwave (UVC) rays, which are the sort that can fast produce a "sunburn", or "welder's flash", principally a "sunburn" of the eye.
